The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 - November 30 each year.

Hurricane Season 1 June - 30 November

Hurricanes can be very dangerous and destructive due to the surges, winds and flooding produced during the storm. For the safety of all residents and visitors, the Town of Oak Island will provide relevant information through local news and weather stations and web sites.

Oak Island Town Officials will determine when the island should be evacuated, based upon recommendations from our County Emergency Manager. (Better Beach Rentals does not issue evacuation orders.)

Better Beach Rentals will try to notify by phone each occupied rental unit of evacuation orders as they are issued. Guests can also tune into local weather and news channels for information.

Mandatory Evacuation

If the state or local authorities order a mandatory evacuation of an area that includes the residential property subject to a vacation rental, the guest in possession of the property shall comply with the evacuation order. The guest shall not be entitled to a refund if prior to the guest taking possession of the property, the guest refused insurance offered by Better Beach Rentals that would have compensated him or her for losses or damage resulting from loss of use of the property due to a mandatory evacuation order. The insurance offered shall be provided by an insurance company duly authorized by the NC Department of Insurance and the cost of the insurance shall not exceed 8% of the total rent charged for the vacation rental to the guest.

To Do List Before You Evacuate

  • Make sure EACH window is firmly closed and locked. Please close all interior doors and firmly close and lock all exterior doors.
  • Secure all outside rockers and furniture by bringing them inside, and place outside trash containers in the enclosed outdoor shower.
  • If you have keys, please bring them to the Better Beach Rentals office so we will know that you and your family have left the island safely. This is the only way we have to monitor leaving, as we will be busy securing homes that do not have rental guests.
  • After the storm has passed and the island has been re-opened to renal guests by town officials, you will be able to pick up your keys after our staff has personally inspected your rental home for damages. We will do everything we possibly can to make this process as quick as possible. Please call our office before returning to Oak Island to resume your vacation.
